CHAPTER 10
The driver held the door open as the three of them got out, the cool air passing over them providing a welcome cleansing from the combined scent of leather and just-eaten fast food.
“This is a nice quiet place to hide someone,” said Hugh as he looked up and down the nearly empty street.
“Yes, with astral projection a thing of the past, we no longer have to keep captives in a constant state of movement,” said Rasmus.
“But you also can’t see things coming,” added Evelyn.
“There are upsides and downsides to everything,” said Rasmus. “I for one am tired of constantly being on the move. Having this secret house in this quiet street allows us to see people coming for miles.”
“Except if they live next door,” said Hugh as they walked up to the front door.
“Nobody lives next door,” said Evelyn as the door opened before them, an enormous man with a pistol standing ready as he looked them all up and down before letting them pass. “They own the whole street.”
The house, situated at the edge of a relatively new housing estate, had been furnished like a display home, every chair perfectly positioned, every table clean and the carpets only showing signs of minor wear.
They followed Rasmus silently as he walked them towards the stairs, pausing at a small door at the side as he turned to the two of them.
“Christian doesn’t know where he is or how long he’s been unconscious, so it’s best not to give him too much information,” said Rasmus. “We’re here to try to get him to say something that might help us find what we’re looking for, but also anything else about his organisation.”
“I don’t think he’ll need any help talking,” said Evelyn.
“It’s having to listen to him that’s the hard part,” added Hugh.
Rasmus opened the door and descended into the basement, Evelyn and Hugh following closely behind.
“Nice to see he’s got a room with a view,” said Hugh, his footsteps close behind Evelyn’s as they walked down the cramped stairway to a door at the bottom.
“Well he’s not a very nice person,” said Evelyn over the sound of their shoes on the solid steps into the well-lit basement.
“You don’t have to remind me,” said Hugh, his hand brushing his neck where Christian had choked him as Rasmus opened the door.
This can’t be easy for Hugh either, she reminded herself.
The heavy door opened, it’s hefty locking mechanism visible as they walked through to a dimly lit room with a bed in the middle.
There on the bed dressing in a white hospital gown, both arms restrained, his eyes a mix of anger and fatigue, lay Christian.
“There you are,” said Christian, his croaky voice filled with daggers. “You’re the reason I’m here.”
“No, you’re the reason you’re here,” said Evelyn, her shoulders bracing despite there being little chance of a physical confrontation. “Because of your choices.”
Christian sneered and looked at the Hugh and Rasmus.
“I see you’ve brought the one with the mouth,” said Christian.
“I thought I’d tag along,” said Hugh.
